Balloting continues for Major League Baseball’s 85th All-Star Game on July 15 Jadeveon Clowney Texans Jersey for Sale at Target Field in Minnesota, and fans can cast their votes using the 2014 All-Star Game Ballot Sponsored by Experian. Deciding who should get voted into the starting lineup can be challenging. Today, Anthony Castrovince and Doug Miller discuss American League shortstops.

Castrovince: All-Star voting is always a battle between statistics and sentiments, and fans retain every right to follow the latter at least as much as the former as they make their selections, should they so desire.

The first ballot update for the Jadeveon Clowney Texans Uniforms American League’s starting lineup was unveiled Tuesday, and, as you might imagine, the sentiment won out over the statistics with regard to Derek Jeter‘s candidacy. With 602,525 votes, he was Men’s Nike #90 Jadeveon Clowney Houston Texans Elite Team Color Jersey ahead by a wide margin over his next-closest competition, Alexei Ramirez.

I suspect it will stay that way, in spite of Jeter’s uninspiring .657 OPS. One way or another, this guy is going to be on the AL All-Star team this year. If it’s not the fans, it will be his peers or AL manager John Farrell ensuring Jeter gets his final CHouston Texans Jadeveon Clowney Women’s Jersey tip of the cap on the Midsummer stage.

So I, for one, am fine with eschewing the stats and giving Jeter What is Jadeveon Clowney Jersey Number in Houston Texans the start. The All-Star Game, regardless of its impact on the World Series schedule, is still about celebrating seismic stars and creating seminal moments. Jeter’s final All-Star goodbye is bound to be a highlight, no matter what else happens at Target Field that July night. I say keep those votes Jadeveon Clowney Texans Jersey Number coming.

What do you think, Doug?

Miller: I think, Anthony, that I could hear the sweet violin music playing while you typed out those paragraphs. Very moving. Poignant, even.

And yes, I agree that Jeter and his fistful of World Series rings and his 3,000-plus hits and his eventual Hall of Fame plaque and his trademarked jump-throw deserve to be on the All-Star team for as long as he wears pinstripes, because that’s simply the right thing to do, even if his OPS is .657.

I just don’t think he should start this game.

The way I see it, the All-Star Game is, first and foremost, about the year at hand. At this stage of 2014, Derek Jeter is not close to being the best Jadeveon Clowney Texans Jersey shortstop in the American League. Alexei Ramirez is. And that’s not close.

Entering Friday’s action, Ramirez leads all AL shortstops in home runs (seven) and RBIs (36). The closest players to him in those categories, respectively, have five (Jonathan Villar, Houston) and 29 (Erick Aybar, Angels). Oh, and Ramirez also has a slash line of .327/.360/.483 and has thrown in 10 stolen bases for good measure.

That’s a beatdown, a shellacking, a landslide, a boat race, whatever you want to call it. And I can’t ignore it when it comes to the 2014 All-Star Game, no matter how much I admire what Jeter has accomplished in a career that puts him in the conversation for the best at his position in Major League history.

Castrovince: One thing that helps my admittedly sappy stance about Jeter is there just isn’t a great pool of candidates in the early going. I agree that if you’re going to vote off the numbers, to date, you’ve got to go with Ramirez.

That said, you do have to applaud what Eduardo Escobar has done in seizing the Twins’ starting job from Pedro Florimon. He’s got a .324/.361/.486 slash line, albeit in only 111 at-bats. It will be interesting to see if he can keep up that offensive pace.

Xander Bogaerts of the Red Sox has a respectable .813 OPS in his first full season, though he’ll soon slide over to third base to accommodate Stephen Drew. Aybar does enough defensively to merit mentioning, even if his offensive numbers aren’t overwhelming.

Again, though, for me it’s Jeter all the way, and evidently a lot of other people agree. So won’t you join me on the sappy side of life, Doug? You know you want to.

Miller: I can be sappy, Anthony. I’m a sucker for the final scene in “Erin Brockovich,” for example. I liked “Tuesdays with Morrie.” I have more than a handful of songs by Bryan Adams on my iPod. In fact, “Heaven” might be my favorite.

So yes, I will be one of the millions of baseball fans, even Red Sox fans, who rise from their seats and applaud Jeter when he tips his cap to the Target Field crowd at his final Midsummer Classic. I do believe he’ll be there, and I do believe, despite my opinion on the matter, that he will start the game, because sentiment is such a powerful element in baseball, and for good reason.

But Ramirez better be there, too. He’s simply the better shortstop right now.

History in the making as Houston Ernesto Frieri Los Angeles Angels Jersey hosts hosts CRG

Watson on Civil Rights Game and racism he endured

Houston will take the field on Friday not as the Astros but as the Eagles — the only Negro Leagues team to play Ernesto Frieri Los Angeles Angels Jersey in Texas. The contest against the Orioles will be the culmination of weeks of buildup to this year’s Civil Rights Game.

The event will begin with the MLB Beacon Awards Luncheon at noon CT, during which the late poet Dr. Maya Angelou, Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Berry Gordy and Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Brown will receive awards. They will later be honored at Minute Maid Park prior to the game, which will get under way after boxing legend and Houston native George Foreman throws the ceremonial first pitch.

“It’s an honor to be able to pitch in tomorrow’s game,” said Miguel Gonzalez, who will start for Baltimore. “It’s something big for everyone, and it’s going to be exciting to be a part of.”

Taking the mound for the Astros will be Brett Oberholtzer, making his second start since being called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Saturday. Last Saturday, against the Mariners, he allowed just two earned runs in six innings.

Those in attendance will also get to see Houston playing its best baseball of the season. The Astros have recorded six straight wins. During their last seven games, rookie outfielder George Springer has blasted seven home Ernesto Frieri Jersey for Sale runs.

“I think the team is definitely maturing,” Houston manager Bo Porter said. “We are winning break points that earlier in the year we were losing. Our position players have really locked in to using the whole field, and it’s really helped us in those situations with men in scoring position.”

The O’s, meanwhile, have struggled. The Orioles have dropped 12 of their last 18 and slipped to .500 after leading the division earlier in May.

Orioles: Wieters makes progress
On Friday, catcher Matt Wieters will take one of the first steps in his return from an elbow injury with a simple game of catch, throwing for the first time in more than three weeks after noted orthopedic surgeon James Andrews recommended he not do anything to aggravate the elbow.

Wieters last played on May 10 and hasn’t caught since May 4.

“It’s gotten a lot better over the last few days, which is what we were waiting on — waiting for it all to subside, and it’s all gotten out,” Wieters said. “Now it’s just a matter of going through the throwing progression, and hopefully, everything keeps getting better.”

Astros: Fowler tries to stay on track
Dexter Fowler’s mini hot streak was briefly halted during Houston’s series-opening win over Baltimore on Thursday with an 0-for-3 performance, but he has been one of the Astros’ best hitters during their recent successful stretch.

Houston extended its winning streak to six games on Thursday, a span that includes a three-game sweep of the Royals. Fowler went 4-for-11 with three walks and three RBIs during the series in Kansas City.

His batting average is up to .259 despite missing four games due to illness earlier in the season.

“Before he had the setback, this guy was off Ernesto Frieri Jersey to a tremendous start,” Porter said. “I really think that the four days being hospitalized, and taking that time, it just took him a minute to get back right in the batter’s box.”

Worth noting
• Outfielder Nelson Cruz didn’t homer on Thursday, but he did drive in Baltimore’s only run in the 3-1 loss. His 49 RBIs tie him with Miami’s Giancarlo Stanton for the Major League lead.

Pollock’s walk-off shot Albert Pujols Angels Jersey caps caps Memorial Day win

SD@ARI: Pollock delivers walk-off home run

PHOENIX — A.J. Pollock made the D-backs’ series opener against the Padres on Memorial Day a memorable affair.

With two outs in the ninth inning and the score tied at 5, Pollock roped a line drive off of Padres reliever Kevin Quackenbush onto the center-field concourse, giving the D-backs a 7-5 victory. It was their first walk-off win since Miguel Montero hit a 10th-inning home run against the Rockies on April 30.

“I knew it was probably going to score Ender Albert Pujols Angels MLB Apparel [Inciarte],” Pollock said of the pinch-runner at first base. “He’s got some great speed. I was trying to be a little greedy. I wanted that thing to go over the fence.

“It was great. It was exciting, just a really cool feeling. That’s what you do. You come in here every day, you put a lot of swings in the cages and you work hard.”

The walk-off hit — a career first for Pollock — came after a back-and-forth game that saw three lead changes before the D-backs center fielder broke a 5-5 tie.

D-backs starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy looked poised to go deep in the game, throwing only 27 pitches through three scoreless innings, but he hit a wall in the fifth.

The 30-year-old right-hander gave up four runs in the frame, including a solo Albert Pujols Shirts home run by Padres first baseman Yonder Alonso and a three-run blast by shortstop Everth Cabrera.

“One of them was just a bad pitch, and from that point on, I struggled to get my sinker to do what I wanted it to do,” McCarthy said. “It felt good, it felt like it did what I wanted it to do. [Cabrera] just jumped on it, and Miggy said it drifted back over. That’s one I’ll go back and look at. Just a series of not great pitches.”

But McCarthy recovered and pitched another 2 1/3 innings, surrendering one more run when pinch-hitter Tommy Medica doubled off him in the seventh inning and reliever Joe Thatcher allowed the runner to score.

The D-backs also got the benefit of two Padres baserunning mistakes.

In the fourth, right fielder Seth Smith lined a double off the center-field wall that ricocheted over Pollock and back toward the infield. Smith tried to turn it into a triple but was called out at third — Albert Pujols Los Angeles Angels Baseball Uniform a call that a replay review confirmed.

“There are times to push Majestic Authentic Womens Albert Pujols Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Pink Splash Jersey the envelope, and we hadn’t done anything [offensively], and Youth Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Albert Pujols Authentic Road Gray Cool Base Jersey I felt like that was one of them,” Smith said. “And it wasn’t Albert Pujols Jersey even really pushing the envelope. I thought that I was going to be safe. And it took two good throws to beat me.”

In the eighth, with Brad Ziegler on to pitch, second baseman Jedd Gyorko was thrown out at second trying to stretch a single. He was tagged out to end the inning, stranding the go-ahead run.

While McCarthy was still on the hill, the D-backs’ offense chased his opponent, Padres starter Tyson Ross.

Ross came into the game with a 1.80 career ERA against the D-backs in five outings (four starts), but the D-backs tagged him for five runs (four earned) in his five-plus innings.

After surrendering two runs in the second, Ross ran into trouble in the sixth. Pollock and right fielder Gerardo Parra led off the inning with a pair of singles, and first baseman Albert Pujols Jersey Cheap Paul Goldschmidt picked up his team-leading 34th RBI, bringing the D-backs within a run.

Montero tied the game with a single of his own, and third baseman Martin Prado gave the D-backs a 5-4 lead with a double off the right-field wall.

But that lead would not hold, giving Pollock the chance to be a hero.

“We’ve had some tough losses lately,” Pollock said. “I feel like we’ve put some good games together, keeping us in the game.

“Early in the year that was the most frustrating part. We let games get out of hand. That’s not us. We’re a team that’s always in it. Last year we were always in it, late parts of the game. I think we’re kind of getting back to that.”

DETROIT — Things went from bad to worse for the Tigers on Sunday when Miguel Cabrera left Kole Calhoun Jersey the game in the seventh inning with a right hamstring cramp. He’s officially listed as day to day.

Manager Brad Ausmus said he hadn’t spoken to Cabrera since the game ended, but when he met him at first base after the injury, he seemed willing to remain in the game.

“If this was September 19 and an important game and we weren’t down by 10, it would’ve been a different story,” Ausmus said. “There was no reason to take a risk. Might as well get him out of there.”

With Detroit trailing 12-2, Cabrera singled to left but was slow leaving the batter’s box and came up clutching Kole Calhoun Jersey for Sale his right leg. Ausmus and trainer Kevin Rand came out of the dugout to check on Cabrera at first base, before escorting him back to the dugout.

Cabrera said after the game that he was Kole Calhoun Los Angeles Angels Jersey feeling better, reiterating that it was just a cramp.

He had been in the lineup as the designated hitter Sunday before being replaced on first base by pinch-runner Bryan Holaday.

Cabrera is batting .322 with a .533 slugging percentage this season.

Joba Chamberlain also left Sunday’s game with a bruised right ankle, suffered trying to cover first base on a close play with the Rangers’ Rougned Odor in the eighth inning. He stayed in the game for another batter, walking Shin-Soo Choo, but was pulled after that.

“I just got kicked,” Chamberlain said. “As I hit the bag, it felt like I just hit my foot.”

It’s the same ankle Chamberlain dislocated in a trampoline accident in 2012. There was no initial swelling immediately after the game, but it was bandaged and treated just in case.

“Just trying to make sure [it doesn’t worsen],” Chamberlain said. “Obviously I don’t want to get anybody up [in the bullpen] in that situation, so that’s frustrating.”

Chamberlain, too, is listed as day to day.

He started his Major League career in Pittsburgh in 2005 Los Angeles Angels Merchandise Store and stayed with the team until the middle of the 2009 season when he was traded to the Braves.

McLouth calls making his Major League debut against the Nationals at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium his biggest highlight as a member of the Pirates.

“[PNC] is a neat place,” McLouth said. “I really enjoyed my time. I love the stadium. It’s one Angels Online Store of my favorites. I was lucky enough to play here a few years. It’s where I started my Major League career.”

Now, McLouth is trying to help the Los Angeles Angels Uniforms Nationals win games. He is clearly an excellent outfielder. McLouth will go through a wall to make a catch like he did against the Dodgers earlier this month.

“That’s preventing runs and being reliable Los Angeles Angels Shirts behind your pitcher,” McLouth said. “It’s just as much a part of the game as the offensive side. You try to keep it a completely separate thing because your pitchers are counting on you. It’s something I work on a lot, too.”

From an offensive standpoint, the hits are starting to fall for McLouth. In his last 10 games entering Friday’s action against the Pirates, McLouth is 8-for-27 [.296]. Overall, he is hitting .154.

“It’s going to come,” McLouth said about his hitting. “I’m going to keep grinding and keep working hard until it still comes.”

Rangers Nolan Ryan Retired Jersey rout rout Tigers to back Darvish in opener

TEX@DET: Choo blasts a two-run homer

DETROIT — The Rangers have an actual winning streak going. They are also 2-0 with Chris Gimenez as their starting catcher.

Gimenez, starting for the second straight game, had a career-high four hits and had no trouble handling Yu Darvish for the first time in the Rangers’ 9-2 victory over the Tigers at Comerica Park on Thursday afternoon.

The victory gives the Rangers a two-game winning streak. It’s only the second time they have won consecutive games since they swept three from the Nolan Ryan Shirts Athletics on April 21-23 to move them a season-high six games over .500. That sweep of the A’s also put them in first place for the first and only time this season.

“We’ve got to keep rolling,” shortstop Elvis Andrus said. “If we could take the next three [against Detroit], that would be awesome. We have to keep scoring like we did today. Put the pressure on the other team and let our starting pitcher get comfortable.”

The Rangers opened Nolan Ryan Retired Jersey up a 9-0 lead against Tigers starter Robbie Ray after four innings as 18 of their first 27 batters reached base on 12 hits, five walks and one error. Gimenez had a big hit in the second inning Vintage Nolan Ryan Baseball Jersey after Adrian Beltre led off with a walk and scored on a double by Alex Rios. Mitch Moreland‘s fly ball moved Beltre to third. The Tigers then moved their infield in against Gimenez but he singled to right to give the Rangers a 2-0 lead.

Beltre had a two-run double as the Rangers scored three in the third. A two-run home run by Shin-Soo Choo and a two-run single by Michael Choice brought in four more runs in the fourth. Gimenez had singles in both innings.

“It’s nice to see Beltre get some big hits,” manager Ron Washington said. “We battled and were able to do some good things offensively. We’ll see how it goes and take it day by day. We’ll just enjoy what we accomplished today and be ready for the next game.”

Darvish, with Gimenez catching him for the first time since being brought up from Triple-A on Tuesday, went seven innings and allowed two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out six. He did so even though he didn’t feel at his best against the Tigers.

“Overall, it wasn’t really my day,” Darvish said. “I didn’t feel really well, but in key situations, I was able to get outs.”

Darvish said he had no problems working with Gimenez, saying, “He let me do whatever I wanted.”

“Yu Darvish is a Major League professional and Chris Gimenez is a Major League professional,” Washington said. “The adjustment wasn’t as hard as you think. They have been together for the Texas Rangers Authentic Vintage 1993 Nolan Ryan Mitchell and Ness Throwback Home White Jersey past two days. I saw them on the same page all day.”

In his previous eight starts, Darvish had thrown to J.P. Arencibia five times, including the last three, and had developed a strong rapport with him. But Arencibia was sent to the Minors on Tuesday.

“I think I did OK,” Gimenez said. “It was a great first experience for me. I tried to gauge the movements on his ball and what he likes to do in certain situations. His stuff is unbelievable, located well. I just wanted [the transition] to Nolan Ryan California Angels Vintage 1973 Mitchell and Ness Home White Cooperstown Jersey be as seamless as possible. I think he was OK with today. I’m trying to be better for him. Actually, before the game, I told everybody I was more worried about catching him than hitting, then I ended up getting four hits today.”

Darvish threw 106 pitches before leaving after seven innings. He is now 4-2 with a 2.35 ERA on the season, including 3-1 with a 2.10 ERA in his last four Nolan Ryan Jersey Rangers starts. He is also 5-0 with a 3.60 ERA in five career starts against the Tigers.

Tabata, Marte exit Hank Conger Jersey for Sale Game Game 2 with leg injuries

NEW YORK — Jose Tabata started in right field in the Pirates’ 5-3 win over the Yankees in the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader, but he came out of the game in the second inning with tightness in his right leg.

Ichiro Suzuki threw Tabata Hank Conger Baseball Uniform out at third base in the second after a single by Chris Stewart. After rounding second base, Tabata appeared to slow down and limp, and Hank Conger Jersey Angels he did not slide when he was tagged out. Instead of talking about the play with third-base coach Nick Leyva, Tabata walked straight to the dugout and began grabbing his right leg. Travis Snider replaced Tabata in right field.

Tabata said he does not expect to go on the 15-day Hank Conger Jersey Cheap disabled list.

“I felt something tight and I didn’t want to Men’s Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 2014 Hank Conger Authentic Alternate Red Cool Base Jersey continue, because if I did, it could become even more strained,” he said. “I feel good and tomorrow is [and off-day]. We’ll see how I feel the next day.”

Starling Marte, who hit a two-run Hank Conger Jersey homer in the sixth inning that gave the Pirates a 3-2 lead, also left the game after the sixth inning with tightness in his left hamstring. Marte did not seem too concerned that he would miss any significant time.

“I’ll be good for the next game,” Marte said.

Reyes’ eighth-inning double sparks Blue Jays to Jadeveon Clowney Gamecocks Jersey win win

TOR@TEX: Bautista drills a blast deep to left field

ARLINGTON — The Blue Jays are starting to show flashes of a team that might have to be taken very seriously in the American League East.

Toronto has won three consecutive games and nine of its past 13. The club finds itself two games over .500 with a 23-21 record and perhaps the most positive news of all is that despite some early season struggles the Blue Jays are only a half game out of first place.

If the Blue Jays are going to be considered legitimate contenders they’ll have to win a lot of tight ballgames and for the second consecutive night the club found a way Jadeveon Clowney Women’s Jersey to get some timely hitting and pitching in a 4-2 victory over the Rangers on Jadeveon Clowney Gamecocks Jersey Saturday night at Globe Life Park in Arlington.

“I just have a good feeling, the guys are feeling good out there,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons Jadeveon Clowney Jersey Number Texans said. “We’ve been playing some pretty good baseball all year if you want to know the truth. But to win some tight games, and it’s tough to win on the road too, those kind of ballgames, that’s big for us.”

At this time last year, the Blue Jays were a woeful 17-25 and dead last in the AL East. They also found themselves nine games back of first-place Boston and with injuries to several key players, the club was on its way to getting buried in the division.

There have been injuries this year too but one of the biggest differences between 2013 and 2014 is that the replacements have come in and helped fill the void. There was the early production of Juan Francisco while Adam Lind was on the disabled list. Now there’s Anthony Gose and even Kevin Pillar stepping up during Colby Rasmus‘ absence to keep the team above water.

That was the case Saturday night as Gose was a difference maker for the second consecutive game and Pillar had a pair of hits, including a key double in that eighth that would eventually lead to the winning run.

“It seems the last couple of games guys are coming in here and having fun,” said veteran left-hander Mark Buehrle, who tossed 6 2/3 quality innings vs Texas. “When you are winning it makes it a lot easier. It makes it fun coming to the park every day, in the dugout, in [the clubhouse] before and after the game.

“We’re like 50 games in, we’re at Jadeveon Clowney Texans Jersey Number a good point. There have been a few times when I thought we were 10 games out of first and somebody said we’re only a game and a half and I was like ‘there’s no way.’ It seems like we played worse than that but we have to feel fortunate nobody has taken off in this division yet.”

On Saturday night, the Blue Jays and Rangers were locked in a 2-2 tie in the eighth when the recently called up Pillar hit a one-out double to right field off left-hander Neal Cotts. Gose then struck out but Reyes came through with a bloop double down the right-field line.

That was easily enough to score Pillar and gave the Blue Jays a boost after the club squandered a lead in the previous inning. For Reyes, it marked the eighth time in his past nine games that he had at least one hit and he’s slowly starting to come around after a slow start to the season. His average was .176 on May 7 but has since gone up to .215.

Buehrle was in position to pick up his Major League-leading eighth victory of the season when he departed with two outs and two men on in the seventh. The lead quickly vanished when left-hander Aaron Loup entered and promptly surrendered an RBI single to No. 9 hitter Luis Sardinas, which tied the game at 2.

That cost Buehrle a shot at another victory but his outing still marked a continuation of his strong start to the season. Until that seventh inning, he was relatively flawless with the exception of an RBI single by right fielder Michael Choice in the third.

Buehrle scattered seven hits and one walk while striking out four over 6 2/3 innings. He was charged with two runs and his 2.11 ERA ranks third in the American League behind only Detroit’s Max Scherzer (1.83) and Oakland’s Sonny Gray (2.10). Buehrle’s numbers on the Men’s Nike #90 Jadeveon Clowney Houston Texans Elite Team Color Jersey road have been even more impressive this season with five earned runs over 36 innings for a 1.25 ERA.

“It’s too bad that he didn’t get a win out of that but that’s the way it goes sometimes,” Gibbons said. “Shoot, all I can say is that he has been great all year. He has been great his whole career too so that shouldn’t surprise anybody.”

Toronto opened the scoring in the first inning when Jose Bautista hit a deep home run to left field off left-hander Robbie Ross Jr. for his 11th of the year. That was all the Blue Jays could generate until the seventh when Gose led off with a double down the left-field line. Gose eventually stole third base and came around to score on a grounder by Melky Cabrera.

The Jadeveon Clowney Texans Jersey for Kids Blue Jays have won six consecutive games and nine of their past 12 in Arlington. Toronto swept Texas in four games last year and will have an opportunity to go for the three-game sweep in the series finale on Houston Texans Jadeveon Clowney Women’s Jersey Sunday afternoon.

National League Jadeveon Clowney Texans Uniforms stacked stacked with worthy first basemen

Balloting continues for Major League Baseball’s 85th All-Star Game on July 15 at Target Field in Minnesota, and fans can cast their votes using the 2014 All-Star Game Ballot Sponsored by Experian. Deciding who should get voted into the starting lineup can be challenging. Today, Richard Justice and Phil Rogers discuss National League first basemen.

Rogers: Doesn’t it seem like every team in the NL has a good first baseman? No wonder Pirates fans have such angst about their lack of an All-Star candidate there. Looking at the stats today, I see eight batting title qualifiers who have an OPS of at least .820. That list doesn’t count Ryan Howard, who has hit seven home runs.

Looks to me like there’s going to be a lot of splitting hairs between now and when Mike Matheny has to decide who goes to Target Field for the All-Star Game and who stays home. I’ve been watching Anthony Rizzo a lot this year, and if he keeps playing like he has, I think he would be a deserving All-Star. He’s hitting for average again after dropping to .233 last season and he’s got a shot at 30-plus home runs. Hitting conditions have been miserable in Chicago, yet Rizzo has been driving the ball anyway. He’s also a very good fielder. It’s too bad Adam LaRoche went on the disabled list. He’s been one thing going right for the Nationals. And, yes, I know about Paul Goldschmidt. He was one of the guys most fantasy experts say take in the top five picks of your draft, and he is fulfilling those big expectations. Who is impressing you?

Justice: You’re right that it’s a ridiculously strong position. Ranking the players by OPS, seven of the top 20 are first basemen, led by LaRoche (seventh) and Justin Morneau (ninth). So I guess Jadeveon Clowney South Carolina Jersey it’s not just picking one, but it’s Matheny figuring out how many first basemen he can take. And then as we’ve discussed before, how do we line up star power vs. 2014 production? Bottom line is we could pick almost any guy and make a case for him. I’d probably vote LaRoche. He’s first among first basemen in OBP, batting average and OPS. I think we both agree that first base ought to be a power position, but LaRoche has been amazingly productive. My heart tells me to go with Joey Votto, because I’m sick of the people who say he ought to expand the strike zone with men on base. In other words, he ought to help the pitcher get him out. Votto, too, is having another terrific year, one of the great players of our generation. As you mention, Morneau has been fabulous, and after the tough times with injuries he has had, it’s great to see him rolling again. On the other hand, we could argue for Freddie Freeman, Goldschmidt, Rizzo or even Adrian Gonzalez. Take your pick, Matheny.

Rogers: I couldn’t agree more about Votto. What is Jadeveon Clowney Jersey Number in Houston Texans You only get 27 outs in a game, and selfish players take up more than their share of them. Votto has never been one of those guys, and the people who think he should swing away are missing the big picture. I covered the Jadeveon Clowney South Carolina Gamecocks Football Jersey Reds’ painful NL Division Series against the Giants in 2012, which I think started a lot of the talk about Votto needing to hit for more power. He was playing on one leg with his bad knee, and he had one excellent plate appearance after another.

How much should we hold LaRoche’s DL time against him? The Nationals think his quad injury will be fine by May 25, when he’s eligible to be activated. I’d say how LaRoche hits when he gets back will tell if he’s in the picture for Matheny.

No matter how the voters and Matheny unravel this one, somebody’s going to be deservedly upset about being left off the All-Star team. It’s so impressive how Goldschmidt and Freeman are getting the job Jadeveon Clowney Jersey Number Texans done in lineups that aren’t really clicking. When I look at the combination of individual play and the impact on the team, though, I’d lean toward Morneau. How great would it be for him to be in the All-Star Game at Target Field?

Justice: Morneau has to be part of the team regardless. He’s obviously helped by Coors Field, hitting .347 there compared to .300 on the road. But Morneau has been productive everywhere. Also, the idea of him going back to Target Field and allowing those fans to give him an ovation that thanks him for those 11 seasons, not just for the way he played, but how he conducted himself. Right up until Morneau was traded last summer, I was hoping the Twins would re-sign him to keep Joe Mauer and Morneau together.

Freeman is another guy in the mix. He seems to fly under the radar, and while he’s not having a monster year, he’s going to end up with his usual number. I Jadeveon Clowney Texans Jersey Number guess, in short, there aren’t any wrong answers at this position.

Rogers: Agreed. So who is your pick at this Jadeveon Clowney Elite Jersey point? We could probably go back and forth all day. I’m going to say Morneau. Now it’s on you. Who do you like best? Goldschmidt with his power and all-around game? Votto with his relentless approach at the plate and graceful fielding? I think you’re right that there’s no wrong answer, but that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook for giving me an answer.

Justice: I’d hope Matheny can keep three guys. Obviously, Morneau for a number of reasons, all of them legitimate. After him, I’d go with Goldschmidt, Votto and LaRoche. I know, I know. Can’t keep four. Every team must be represented. If one guy must be dropped from that list, it would be … LaRoche? Just based on WAR, which is a good measure on this stuff, Goldschmidt and Votto are slam dunks, and because it’s an easy column, Morneau should be on the squad. Bet Matheny isn’t planning on keeping even three. Glad he’s making the call, not us.

Cueto’s historic shutout Hank Conger Jersey begins begins doubleheader

CINCINNATI — Those around Johnny Cueto on the Reds have long run out of superlatives to describe his performances after each start this season.

Here’s a suggestion for Thursday: historic.

In a 5-0 Reds win over the Padres in Game 1 of a day-night doubleheader at Great American Ball Park, Cueto faced two batters over the minimum for a three-hit shutout while walking two and striking out eight. It was his third complete game.

“That guy, he needs to start getting some national attention,” said Reds shortstop Zack Cozart, who had three hits, including a two-run single. “I was watching TV the other day and they were still talking about [Zack] Greinke and [Clayton] Kershaw and [Jose] Fernandez. I’m like, ‘What about Johnny C.?'”

For the first time this season, Cueto did not allow an extra-base Hank Conger Los Angeles Angels Jersey hit. No Padres batters reached second base in the game until Will Venable did so in the ninth. After his two-out walk, Venable advanced on defensive indifference. On Cueto’s 116th and final pitch of the game, he got Everth Cabrera to ground routinely back towards the mound to end the game.

“I think there have been games where he’s been sharper, but he just kept making pitches,” Reds manager Bryan Price said. “I don’t know what else I can say about Johnny.”

Cueto now has six straight starts of eight innings or more. No one has done that in the big leagues since Cliff Lee ran off a streak of 10 in a row in 2010, and no Reds pitcher has achieved that since Tom Browning in 1989.

“I think it’s a continuation of what he’s done all season,” Padres manager Bud Black said of Cueto. “A good mix of pitches. He pitched a very good game.”

Over his last 55 innings, Cueto has allowed only five runs to lower his Major League-leading ERA to 1.25 over a league-most 72 innings pitched. He has yet to give up more than five hits in a game this season.

As far as Cueto was concerned, he’s the best starting pitcher in the game right now.

“I will say yes, because the numbers talk,” Cueto said via translator Tomas Vera. “My numbers are going to talk for me. Everybody else has to do and worry about their own numbers. When I go on the mound, I do my job. I have Hank Conger Jersey Cheap to do my job to get the best numbers.”

To find the last Major League pitcher to start a season with at least seven innings pitched and two runs or fewer allowed over his first nine starts, one has to look back to the dead-ball era. Harry Krause of the 1909 Philadelphia Athletics did it over 10 straight starts, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

“I didn’t know that was something that was there,” Cueto said. “Now that I know, I will say, ‘Thank god that I’m the guy doing it after 100 years.'”

No Reds pitcher has worked at least seven innings in their first nine starts since Bucky Walters began the 1944 season with 20 in a row.

The game began when Cueto mishandled a Venable bunt near the mound Men’s Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 2014 Hank Conger Authentic Alternate Red Cool Base Jersey for a single. Venable was promptly erased when Cabrera bounced into a double play. Cueto also induced a double play to end the top of the seventh. In the fourth inning after his single, Cabrera was thrown out trying to steal by catcher Brayan Pena.

“[What’s] funny as we’ve covered so much about Johnny and the start of Hank Conger Jersey Angels his season is that he’s so good at holding runners,” Price said. “I think he has the quickest feet and the best move in the National League. He’s great at holding runners. He’s quick to the plate. He gives our catchers a chance to throw guys out should they attempt to steal. Every facet of the game seems to just be right where it needs to be to have a sensational start to the season, which he’s had.”

Padres starter Ian Kennedy, who had a 1.53 career ERA in four starts vs. the Reds with eight innings pitched in three of those games, gave up five runs and 11 hits over six innings. He was a worthy foe for Cueto in the early going, however.

Kennedy sprayed four hits over his first four Hank Conger Jersey for Sale innings, but he never seemed to be in any real danger. Things changed in the Reds’ fifth of a scoreless game after a Cozart leadoff single to center field. Skip Schumaker kept the inning going Hank Conger Jersey with a two-out single on the ground into right field.

That set up Brandon Phillips, who pulled a 2-1 pitch into the left-field seats for the three-run homer, his third of the season.

In the sixth, following Ryan Ludwick’s infield single and Pena’s double, Cozart ended an 0-for-15 skid with runners in scoring position with a two-run single up the middle for a 5-0 lead. Every Reds starting position player had at least one hit in the game.

Both starting pitchers were moved back a day because of Wednesday’s rainout. Coincidentally, Cueto did not feel his best warming up in the bullpen on Thursday before the game.

“Maybe [the postponement was] one of the reasons,” Cueto said. “When you go in a routine and you have a day off and a day off, more than you’re supposed to have, things get heavy. Your body gets heavy. You know what? I have to forget about that.”

Cueto certainly did, and he worked the ninth complete game of his career and fourth career shutout.

“You have to give all the credit to him,” Pena said. “He continues to improve. He’s just getting better and better each time he goes out there. I’m going to sound like a broken record — he’s the truth. … He’s one the best right now in the game.”
